On Emptiness

A common experience I encounter is that of a sense of emptiness - the feeling that “there must be something more”, that “I am missing something”, the sense of “my life should feel more fulfilling, more meaningful”. This empty feeling is behind all addiction, consumerism (which is just another type of addiction). It’s also behind cults, religion, tribalism and the obsessive acquisition of wealth and power. This is the hungry ego in action… tooth and nail. This feeling is most acutely experienced in such conditions as anxiety, depression and loneliness.  But here’s the thing, this feeling cannot be “fixed” by the acquisition of stuff. Grief

Only two things in this life are certain: you will die and you don’t know when. These are certainties yet we spend most of our time trying to avoid thinking about such “unpleasant” things. Thus, when someone dies or is seriously ill it becomes a calamity. We are unprepared. Everything about our physical bodies has been shaped by evolution. Our evolutionary mission is simply to survive and reproduce. Any adaptation which increases the chances of success in this mission is kept and becomes a part of our genome. The Euphoria trap

What is happiness? A famous Buddhist  saying  goes like this:  “Happiness  (sukkha)  is  that  which  can  be borne with  ease.  Suffering (dukkha) is that which cannot be borne with ease.”  This is about as simple and direct a definition of happiness as I have found. I have stated on many occasions that one of the greatest causes of unhappiness is the belief that we ought to be happy. Another cause is the effort to create/ we use chasing happiness combined without not knowing what happiness is.
